First Generation

1. Thomas Tracy [261] was born in 1820 in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada and died on 7 May 1896 in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada, aged 76. The cause of his death was Pneumonia after a three-day illness.

Thomas Tracy was born in 1820 in Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. He followed the Baptist faith throughout his life and worked primarily as a farmer, later identified as a carpenter.

On an estimated date about 1846, Thomas married Elizabeth Tracy in New Brunswick.

By 1861, at age about 41, Thomas lived in Sackville, where he worked as a farmer and headed a household that included his wife Elizabeth and five children. Two children had died before 1861.

By 1871, at age about 51, he continued farming in Sackville, maintaining the same religious affiliation and Irish origin noted in census records. All his ten surviving children were living with Thomas and Elizabeth at that time, although the youngest, Perciville, died in the following year.

In 1881, at age about 61, Thomas remained in Sackville working as a farmer. His two youngest surviving sons, (William) Hilbert and Melvin were living with him and helping with the farm.

By 1891, at age about 71, he was still residing there and identified again as a farmer, while his adult son Hilbert, aged 26, remained in the household working as a labourer.

Thomas Tracy died on 7 May 1896 in Sackville at age 76 from pneumonia after an illness lasting three days. His death certificate listed him as a carpenter. By then he may have passed his farming duties to his son, Hilbert.

Thomas and Elizabeth Tracy had seven sons (Guilford and Perciville died young) and three daughters (Climena died young). There is no further information concerning their son Moses (born about 1855).

13. Ernest L. Tracy [4757] (John L.2, Thomas1) was born about 1886.

14. Cynthia F. Tracy [4758] (John L.2, Thomas1) was born about 1888.

15. John W. Tracy [4759] (John L.2, Thomas1) was born about 1890.

16. Alida L. Tracy [4761] (John L.2, Thomas1) was born about 1900.

17. Roland V. Tracy [4760] (John L.2, Thomas1)

18. Ada Gertrude Sharp Tracy [4766] (Moses Lawrence2, Thomas1) was born on 5 Nov 1881 in USA, died on 12 Jul 1924 in Moncton, Westmorland County, NB, Canada, aged 42, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Moncton, Westmorland County, NB, Canada.

Ada was born in the USA in November 5 1881 and immigrated to Canada in 1885 at about age 4. There is no record of Moses or Elizabeth travelling to the USA, raising speculation that Ada was adopted, perhaps from Tracy relatives, although no formal record confirms this theory.

By 1891, at age about 10, Ada lived in Moncton, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, in the household of Moses and Elizabeth Tracy. She remained in Moncton with her parents until at least 1901 at age 19.

On 11 Oct 1905, at age 23, Ada married John J. Willis in Moncton.

Ada Gertrude Sharp Tracy died on 12 Jul 1924 in Moncton at age about 42 from peritonitis. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

Ada and John Willis had no children, however it is probable that Ada gave birth to a boy out of wedlock and then moved away from her parents' home, leaving Moses and Elizabeth to raise Fred as their own son.

The reasoning for this assumption follows. Fred was born in 1902, when Ada was age 21 and when Elizabeth was age 46. Fred is recorded as the son of Moses and Elizabeth, but the age difference supports Ada as the mother. This conjecture is further supported in the 1921 Census that records Fred's birth mother was born in the USA, which could not have been Elizabeth, who was born in Nova Scotia. Ada was born in the USA, and she does not appear in the census after Fred was born, implicating her in leaving home without the child.

Ada married John J. Willis [4768].

Ada Gertrude Sharp Tracy and John J. Willis were married in Moncton, NB, by license on 11 Oct 1905. The officient was Geo. E. Whidden, and witnesses were Geo. E. Tracy and Mrs. D. D. Betts.

19. Fred Tracy [4767] (Moses Lawrence2, Thomas1) was born in Jan 1902.

The 1911 Census of Canada records Fred as a son of Moses and Elizabeth, however the 21-year gap between Ada and Fred makes that improbable, but not impossible. Ada is missing from the 1911 census, suggesting she either moved away or died some time after her 19th birthday. In either case Moses and Elizabeth raised Fred as their own son.

The 1921 census reports both Fred and his mother were born in the USA. ADA was born in the USA. As there is no evidence Moses or Elizabeth travelled to the USA, the most likely reconstruction is that Ada gave birth to Fred, and for reasons unknown, Moses and Elizabeth raised Fred as their own son.

20. Melita Tracy [215] (William Hilbert2, Thomas1) was born on 20 Oct 1894, died in 1981, aged 87, and was buried in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada.
