1. James Sutherland [2149] was born in 1755 and died on 3 Apr 1841, aged 86.

In 1784, James and Mary Ann emigrated from Ulster, Northern Ireland to Nova Scotia with their infant son, John. They initially settled in Portapique, Nova Scotia, where they lived for approximately five years while James searched for suitable land.

By 1791, James established a homestead at Westchester Lake, which he renamed Sutherland Lake. During this period, additional children were born, including James Jr. and Elizabeth in Portapique, and Agnes at the new homestead.

James cleared and farmed the land under difficult conditions, facing poor soil, heavy glacial debris, and the absence of secure land title. He petitioned the colonial government for many years to obtain legal ownership of the land.

In about 1810, after sustained effort and with support from local officials, James received title to 600 acres. In 1811, additional land grants were secured for his sons, and in 1813 he purchased further acreage, expanding the family holdings.

James established a substantial homestead along the Post Road, which later became the Coach Road. The property functioned as both a residence and an inn serving travelers and local trade.

James passed the homestead to his son James Jr.

James married Mary Ann [2150]. Mary was born in 1751 and died on 14 Dec 1820, aged 69.

In 1784, Mary Ann emigrated with her husband and infant son from Ulster, Northern Ireland to Nova Scotia.

She lived with her family in Portapique for several years before relocating to the Sutherland Lake homestead in 1791.

Mary Ann raised her children under early settlement conditions in rural Nova Scotia.

James next married Rebecca Nicholson [2157]. Rebecca was born in 1753 and died on 9 Mar 1829, aged 76.

Susannah Moore was the daughter of Rebecca Nicholson, who was James Sutherland's second wife. Rebecca married her first husband, William Moore, and then became Rebecca Moore. During her first marriage, Rebecca gave birth to Susannah Moore. Later, Rebecca married James Sutherland - it was a second marriage for both of them.

2. John Sutherland [2151] (James¹) was born in 1782 in Ulster, Northern Ireland and died on 22 Oct 1868, aged 86.

John was nearly two years of age when his parents left their leased farm in Northern Ireland and undertook the lengthy and frequently terrifying crossing of the Atlantic Ocean to New York. They transferred to one of the coastal schooners which plied along the shores of New England to the Bay of Fundy and its adjoining waters and landed in Portapique, a village on the shore of Cobequid Bay in Colchester County, Nova Scotia.

When he attained maturity he worked on the farm which his father had established near the body of water which became known as Sutherland Lake. It was up in the Cobeguid Mountains at nearly 275 m (about 900 ft.) of elevation. His father submitted a memorial on his behalf in 1811 to the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia for a grant of land adjoining his own and John received title to Lot C consisting of eighty one hectares (200 acres) just south of the lake and athwart the Cumberland Colchester border. A similar petition on behalf of John's brother, James, Jr., yielded Lot B (same size) for the younger brother. He married Charlot(te), daughter of Aaron and Hannah Fountain who were Loyalists of French extraction. They had been forced from their home in Bedford in the State of New York, following the granting of independence to the victorious colonists. Charlot, however, was born in Nova Scotia.

With the help of his father, John created a small farm from the thickly wooded land near the south end of the lake and in time built a facility called the Bowery which sometimes served as an inn catering to travellers using the Post Road between the Truro area and Amherst. He later housed the paupers of the area and was paid to care for them by the Westchester Township. A small community, consisting of eleven houses, a mill, creamery, and tannery existed near the inn during much of the 19th century. When the railway service through Westchester began in 1872 the use of the Coach Road declined rapidly. The population of the Sutherland Lake environs, including the Bowery, dwindled as well. The Coach road had been built in the years 1840 to 1842 to replace the old Post Road and had attracted a great deal of use for it was the most direct thoroughfare over the mountains from Truro to Amherst.

Prior to 1842 John had staunchly opposed the construction of a road across his property by the Government without consultation with him or any discussion of compensation for damage done to his land. He had directed letters of protest to the highest authority in the Province- Lord Viscount Falkland, the Lieutenant Governor. Some of these letters are in the Provincial Archives although a reponse has not been found. It is likely that he did receive a small compensation eventually but it was a burning issue for some time in the early 1840's. Greatly diminished use of the old Post Road contributed to the decline of residents and in time almost all of the farms on it were abandoned, and maintenance of the road ceased.

Since there were no schools then, his mother taught John to read and write. He supported the community effort to provide a school in 1816. The names of their two oldest children, Lucy and Ezra , appear on the register of this school in 1822. In 1828 and subsequent years he made contributions of labor, the use of his oxen, and materials such as lumber and nails toward the construction of a Meeting House. It was to be used by organized groups in the community for public meetings and also for church services by denominations which chose to establish a presence in the community.

As well as maintaining his own farm, he sometimes worked on his father's land in seeding and harvest time. It is recorded that he received the rate of pay current for farm labor in that area of Nova Scotia. It was either three or four shillings per day depending on the difficulty of the task.

They had a family of nine and Charlot must have been a hard working wife in support of her husband's projects. It seems somewhat ironical that she is remembered in family lore chiefly because she, her niece Loisa, and her daughter Ruth enjoyed smoking their clay pipes during moments of relaxation.

John married Charlot Fountain [2152]. Charlot was born on 5 May 1791 and died on 6 Jun 1863, aged 72.

3. James Sutherland Jr. [2147] (James¹) was born on 29 Mar 1789 in Portapique, NS, Canada and died on 23 Aug 1864, aged 75.

James Jr., was taught to read and write by his parents. He also became skilled in shoemaking, weaving, tanning, and milling.

James Jr. worked closely with his father, James, and they established a coach stop and trading post near the lake on the Post Road, and later the Coach Road, that ran beside Sutherland Lake on Westchester Mountain. Like his father, James Jr. was a farmer, woodsman, innkeeper, merchant, and builder.

Both James Sr. and Jr. were accomplished shoe makers. They sold them in the community for 12 to 15 shillings per pair. Women's shoes commanded a lower price of 9 shillings. They also repaired shoes. They taught their craft to John Jr., who was John's son. John was James Jr.'s brother, so John Jr. was James Jr.'s nephew.

James Jr. was a shrewd merchant. The Sutherland homestead was a natural stop for peddlers who travelled the Post Road, and later the Coach Road. He bought their goods, and then sold, or more often bartered them with the local residents. James Jr. often traded these peddlers' goods in exchange for services on the farm, such as planting, reaping, threshing, harvesting, and clearing.

James Jr. also rented out his horse and buggy to residents who need a means of travel. He also rented out his oxen and wagon or plow to farmers. James Jr. winter stabled and summer pastured other farmers' livestock for a fee.

He logged his 600 acres of land twice each year, and when the Portapique River swelled its banks, he sold his timber down to the mills operated by Gabriel Purdy or Thomas Carr. The log drives were hard and dangerous work. James Jr. hired crews to float the rafts of logs down the river.

In 1846, James Jr. sold the logging rights for five years to his land west of the Portapique River to John William Davidson. The deal earned James Jr. 5 pounds in cash at the end of the first year, 5 pounds in cash at the end of the third year, and 10 pounds in corn, flour, and other dry goods on demand.

James Jr. was Chairman of the Westchester Township Committee for some time. In 1828 the Committee agreed Sutherland Lake had grown in population to the point where it required its own hall where community events and religious services could take place. James Jr. and his brother, John (who also lived in Sutherland Lake) contributed building supplies as well as their own expert labour. James Jr. also donated 3 pounds in cash, which was then a sizeable contribution.

Among other things, the new meeting hall hosted temperance meetings, as trade with the West Indies saw the growing importation of rum and other spirits, much to the chagrin of the Presbyterian and Baptist elders. James Jr. himself frequently purchased rum - not for his own consumption, of course - but to serve travelers who stopped at his inn along the road.

James Jr.'s first child, Charles, was born out of wedlock to Mary Skid. James Jr. married his first wife, Martha Crawford, in 1815. She died in 1817, days after giving birth to twins, Martha and Isaiah. James Jr. married his second wife, Susannah Moore in 1819. Susannah was the daughter of Rebecca Nicholson, whom James Sr. married as his second wife.

There is an entry in James Jr.'s records indicating two of his children, Rebecca at age six and William at age 3, were boarded with James Leyton in 1828. The record does not state how long they stayed in boarding. This was the same year in which his daughter Mary was born.

Susannah was a capable woman who, in addition to bringing up many children, was hostess of the Sutherland Inn. Taught to weave by her Irish parents, she carried on a small weaving industry in her home.

Westchester residents of today believe that the large Sutherland house, on the original Post road, burned down and the smaller house replacing it was built a short distance nearer the lake. Since the account book kept by James Jr. has no entries after 1850, it is likely that his activities as a merchant and innkeeper were concluded about that year.

James Jr. and Susannah were in semi-retirement by 1851. The two oldest girls were married and away from home. Agnes (Mrs. Matthew Peppard) lived in Debert, while Rebecca (Mrs. Aaron Fountain) lived much further away in Middleboro.

In 1852, on James Jr.'s birthday, he and Susannah deeded their house and land (1000 acres) to William, their elder son. Later James realized that the three daughters, who were still unmarried and living at home, had received no benefits as William had. He entered into an agreement in 1858 with William in which William would give a number of farm animals (or their value) to Mary, Susan, and Naomi over the next three years, and also make available, on demand, 200 pounds sterling to James Jr. and Susannah. This was considered to be fair payment for the land, livestock and farming equipment.

According to William's diary (1860) his parents would occasionally use his horse and buggy to make visits to Agnes's home in Debert and, at other times, drive to Middleboro (thirty km from Sutherland Lake) for a few days' visit with Rebecca and her husband. Even at the age of seventy-one, James Jr. helped William work the hayfield and stow the hay in the mow.

James Jr. hired a local girl, Elizabeth Webb, as a domestic servant in 1926. A second woman, Rebeckah Purdy, performed housework in the Sutherland homestead for six months in 1927.

As James Jr.'s parents grew older, they lived with Susannah and James Jr. Susannah and Mary were both accomplished seamstresses and weavers, and they sold custom clothing to the local residents. They grew their own flax and spun the wool James Jr. sheared from the sheep on a foot-driven spinning wheel.

James had a relationship with Mary Skid [2174].

The only child from this marriage was:

Susannah Moore, Rebecca's daughter, married James Sutherland Jr. as his second wife. James Jr. was the son to James, noted above. So when James Jr. married Susannah Moore, Rebecca was both mother and mother-in-law to Susannah.

5. Agnes Sutherland [2155] (James¹) was born on 10 May 1794 in Sutherland Lake, NS, Canada and died on 17 Dec 1867, aged 73.

Agnes married Noah Webb Jr. [2156]. Noah was born on 29 Oct 1802 and died on 11 Mar 1887, aged 84.

Noah was the oldest of 6 brothers and 6 sisters. Noah and Agnes settled on a farm about 2 Km south of Sutherland Lake. They left in the mid 1850's for New Jerusalem, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. The New Brunswick Museum holds a land grant record, number 1249, of 100 acres, designated Lot 20, Block 55, to Noah Webb Jr.

After his death, Noah surprised his family when they learned his will had bequeathed $100 each to James L. Moore and James Sutherland, Jr., or their heirs, as these two men "had done the most for me during my lifetime." The beneficiaries had been dead for over 20 years, and their heirs were many and widely dispersed. There were many letters exchanged between Noah's sons, Isaiah, James, and Ruben and the Moore and Sutherland families. When probate occurred two years later, it is likely there was insufficient funds to honor Noah's bequests.

Lucy married John Starret [2161]. John was born about 1811 and died in 1832, aged about 21.

John came from Castlereagh (now Castlereigh) in Colchester, about seven km/four mi. from Sutherland Lake. The Starret brothers had received a grant of 121 ha/300 acres of land there and had started a lumbering operation.

John was severely injured in a woods accident. Realizing that he was unlikely to survive, he made his will as follows:

In the name of God, Amen I, John Starret, of Castlereigh in the District of Colchester and County of Halifax and Province of Nova Scotia, calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make and constitute this my last will and testament that is to say.

First and principally I give my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent manner at the discretion of my executors hereafter named, and as to what earthly goods it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and bequeath in the manner following -

First, that all my lawful debts be paid out of my disposable property, after that one bed and bedhead and bedding, and one cow and nine sheep be given to my beloved wife, Lucia Starret, and the remaining part of the property, if any, to go forward to bringing up and schooling my son, John William Starret. I also give and bequeath to my son, John William Starret, one hundred and fifty acres of land that I am now living on, it to remain in the hands - indecipherable - until he becomes of age, which is to say twenty one years old, then to be delivered to him by my executors on their- indecipherable -, and lastly that my son lives with his dear mother if she wishes him while she remains my widow, and well used but under the care of my executors, and it is in their power to find him a good and suitable place at any time if not used well and I appoint Ruben Starret and Jacob G. Purdy to be my executors to this my last will and testament sealed with my seal and dated this fifth day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty two.

John died before he and Lucy had any children.

Lucy next married William Burnside [2162]. William was born in 1819 and died on 21 Sep 1887, aged 68.

The presiding clergyman at the marriage was Pastor John Cogswell of the Baptist Church in River Philip.

William was from the County Donegal in Ireland. He Lucy, and their family
moved in about 1870 from Westchester to Rackley, a small community
twelve km west of Pugwash.

7. Ezra Sutherland [2163] (John², James¹) was born on 23 Dec 1814 and died on 3 Dec 1872, aged 57.

Ezra was a cousin to his wife, Louisa.

He was a farmer and a woodsman. By the early 1850's, Ezra owned a small sawmill that he operated a few months a year with the help of a few labourers.

After the death of his parents, Ezra's sisters, Eliza Jane and Ruth, lived with Ezra and Louisa.

Ezra joined the Westchester Militia in response to the Fenian threat. He was assigned drilling duty among a team of old-timers.

The census of 1871 states that Ezra was a deaf mute. This seems incredulous considering his attendance at school, his successful business operation, his participation in the social life of the community, and his activity as a member of the Militia.

Ezra and Louisa are buried in the old abandoned cemetery on the hillside immediately northwest of Lake Sutherland.

Ezra married Loisa "Louisa" Fountain [2164]. Louisa was born in 1818 and died on 9 Feb 1907, aged 89. She was usually called Louisa.

Louisa was a cousin to her husband, Ezra.


Ezra and Louisa are buried in the old abandoned cemetery on the hillside immediately northwest of Lake Sutherland.

8. John Sutherland Jr. [2165] (John², James¹) was born on 23 Nov 1817 and died on 4 Aug 1894, aged 76.

John, Jr. learned shoemaking from his grandfather. He practiced that trade in addition to farming. The census lists him as a farmer and shoemaker, of Irish descent, and a Baptist.

After they married, John and Hannah left Sutherland Lake for a community area called Rose, about 13 Km northwest. Rose had been established in 1785 by several Loyalists from New York State and was on the Post Road, which ran from there to River Philip and onward to Amherst. When the Coach Road came into use in 1842 the two roads were merged just to the south of Rose, and the resulting road became the primary passageway, along the same route the Trans Canada Highway 104 takes now.

John was appointed a Justice of the Peace in his later years. Little information is recorded concerning his community activities except that he was a member of the Temperance Society in 1843, and in 1862 he was appointed to a Township Committee responsible for planning the Town Hall.

John, Hannah, and most of their children were buried in the Rose cemetery.

John married Hannah Taylor [2166]. Hannah was born on 22 Sep 1832 and died on 29 Aug 1909, aged 76.

9. Mary Ann Sutherland [2167] (John², James¹) was born on 5 May 1820.

Mary Ann had no family. It is possible she died early in life, as there is no further mention of her in the Sutherland records.

10. Eliza Jane Sutherland [2168] (John², James¹) was born on 21 Apr 1824 and died on 9 Feb 1878, aged 53.

Eliza had no family.

There is very little in the records concerning Eliza, although she appears in the 1871 census and was living with Ezra and Loisa. She was on the roll of the Abstinence Society in the period 1843 to 1847. She died in 1878 and was buried in the Sutherland cemetery near the lake.

11. Aaron L. Sutherland [2169] (John², James¹) was born on 19 Sep 1827.

Aaron does not appear in letters, diaries, account books, membership lists of organizations, tombstones or anywhere else except for one land transaction carried out in 1861. There was a transfer of 200 acres of land (Lot D) from John Sutherland to Aaron. The details of his life remain unknown.

12. Ruth Alice Sutherland [2170] (John², James¹) was born on 22 May 1830 and died on 9 Dec 1913, aged 83.

Ruth had no family.

She was active in most community organizations. The 1871 census shows that she lived with Ezra and Loisa. Following Ezra's death, both Ruth and Loisa lived with Amos and Alice (Weatherbee) Sutherland, as indicated in the 1881 census.

Ruth became the postmistress of the tiny community of Sutherland Lake and received a stipend of twelve dollars per year. After Ruth died, her niece, Alberta, took over the postmaster duties.

She was also involved in some of the transfers of land at the southern end of the lake. She was buried in the old Sutherland burying ground, a few hundred metres up the ridge to the northwest of the lake.

13. James Henry Sutherland [2171] (John², James¹) was born on 2 Nov 1832, died on 24 Aug 1890, aged 57, and was buried in Rockley Cemetery.

James grew up on the Sutherland farm, and turned to the lumbering trade when he was old enough to hold a job. In 1860 James purchased and operating his own mill. He gave up the business after his first wife, Margaret, died around 1870. James left Westchester to settle on a farm in Port Philip, near Pugwash. There he married his second wife, Matilda and returned to farming.

James married Margaret [2172]. Margaret was born in 1845 and died about 1870, aged about 25.

Martha Sutherland died while giving birth to her third child, George Howard. In a tragic irony, her mother, Martha Crawford, died immediately after giving birth to Martha Sutherland and her twin brother, Isaiah.

Martha married James Lindsay Moore [2179], son of James Moore [2154] and Elizabeth Sutherland [2153]. James was born on 3 Nov 1821 and died on 12 Aug 1894, aged 72.

James and his wife Martha were cousins.

Isiah was a twin to sister Martha.

He lived in Westchester with has father James and stepmother Susannah until 1843. A year after they married, Isaiah and Eleanor settled in Franklin, Hancock County, Maine, U.S.A. It is possible Eleanor was from that region.

According to the Sutherland family Bible, Isaiah practiced medicine as a doctor, but where he qualified or served as an apprentice is not known.

20. William Sutherland [2145] (James Jr.², James¹) was born on 27 Oct 1825, died on 13 Nov 1898, aged 73, and was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford, NS, Canada.

William, eldest son of James, Jr. and Susannah, was the most prolific chronicler among the Westchester Sutherlands. He left letters, records, and a diary which portrayed an unvarnished picture of the difficult life of a Westchester farmer in those days.

He grew up on the farm and remained with his parents, taking over the property completely in 1858, although they deeded the land to him in 1852. In return for the property, William promised to pay one cow, 3 ewes, and three lambs each to Mary, Susan, and Naomi, William's three unmarried sisters who still lived at home. The agreement also included a provision that compelled William to pay 200 pounds to his parents, if and when they so demanded. He also pledged to provide a home for his parents and (to quote the actual wording) "good and comfortable support as long as they live, that is, good and comfortable house room with plenty of wood already for the fireplace and all needful articles of clothing and boots and shoes likewise tobacco and medicine as may be needed also horse and carriage when we want."

William kept receipts showing he dutifully paid each sister one cow and six sheep in successive years from 1859 to 1861, however there are no records indicating James and Susannah claimed their 200-pound payment. It would be a huge sum in those days. It is possible this demand note was a mechanism that persuaded William to honour his pledge to support his spinster sisters.

His 'line per day' diary of 1860 portrays William as a diligent worker - the only blank spaces occur on Sundays when he performed the essential chores to care for the livestock. At least one day each week he harnessed up the horse and buggy (or sleigh) and travelled to Acadia Mines or to Great Village (about twenty km from the lake) to trade or barter farm produce - eggs, butter, meat, etc. - in order to provide essential household supplies and clothing for his family. Sometimes he made a few pence, other times he returned home owing a shilling or two to another merchant. Occasionally he recorded the discouraging words - 'sold nothing, got nothing'.

He spent the early spring tending to his stand of maples, tapping trees, and boiling sap to make maple syrup and sugar cakes. These products provided valuable trading commodities and were a favourite treat at family meals. William recorded producing 60 pounds of maple sugar and 25 gallons of syrup in 1860.

William was a licenced lumber surveyor and he logged his own woods. He sheared and butchered his own sheep. He paid his road levies by working his team of oxen on road repairs, replanking bridges, and hauling gravel to fill in the many potholes. He allowed himself the luxury of one day off on March 1, 1860. His diary for that day read "not doing much - caught two trouts."

William's record shows that, on February 3, 1860, he went for the doctor and paid him twenty shillings, and he paid the midwife, Mrs. Rushton, five shillings. William neglected to mention he incurred these expenses in support of the birth of his first son, Alvin.

There was little social activity within the sparse community. William and Mary Jane visited back and forth only occasionally with uncle John and aunt Charlotte, also with cousin Ezra and Louisa. They spent Christmas Day with half-brother Charles and Rebecca. From time to time Mary Jane's brothers visited from Middleboro. William's daily record shows there were over fifty visitors to the Sutherland home in 1860, not all relatives, who stayed with them usually one night but sometimes several nights.

In the same year William and Mary Jane made two or three trips to the Wallace area, 35 km to the northeast, to visit the Crawfords and McKims. On one occasion they purchased a yoke of oxen.

William's father died in 1864, and his mother survived until 1871. His wife, Mary Jane, never cared for life in Westchester and agitated to move nearer to her brothers in Hartford. After his mother died, William made a momentous decision and sold the 1000-acre Sutherland property to a lumberman, Dominic Richard, for $700. This was to be paid in instalments in equal amounts over the next ten years. However, fifteen years later, in 1886, there was still a large amount owing to William.

He purchased 175 acres of land in West Hansford (sometimes called Gray's Road), a small community about seven km southeast of the town of Oxford. It was about thirteen km from Mary Jane's former home in Middleboro. The change of locale didn't seem to be much of an improvement - he starting a new farm at age fifty. William eked out a bare subsistence, which must have seemed faint improvement to Mary Jane.

William became the Postmaster at Hansford and was the mail courier for the area from Thompson Station to South Victoria while he attended to his livestock and his farming chores. While the short railway line from Oxford Junction to Pictou was under construction, William sold many railway ties harvested from his own forests. The railway was completed in 1888.

William's contributions to community life in Westchester were considerable. He was elected to the Township Committee. He was Commanding Officer of the Westchester militia. William was also a leading figure in the formation of a Temperance Society, and he was an active supporter of the village school and Church. William was appointed to a special Committee in 1862 to build a Town Hall.

While William prevailed in the community, bare survival was an unhappy existence for the family, especially for Mary Jane. She possibly became depressed by the death of their two youngest children in diphtheria epidemics. For whatever reason, Mary Jane grew increasingly unhappy. They separated in 1888 and she returned to the original Crawford family homestead in the Hartford area. Meanwhile William continued in his civic duties - he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1888. He was Secretary to the School Board following his arrival in West Hansford and for the next twenty years. He organized a Committee to establish a cemetery in the community.

In his declining years, William lived with his son, Alvin, and he died in 1898. Mary Jane eventually returned to Hansford and lived with her sister Agnes (Mrs. Isaac Mattinson) for the last two years of her life. She passed away in 1913.

Mary had no family. She lived in William's home until her mother died in 1871, although she visited her other sisters in Middleboro and Debert from time to time. Mary eventually went to live with Naomi, who had by then married C. S. Durning and joined him on his farm in Economy.

22. James Lindsay Sutherland [2187] (James Jr.², James¹) was born on 22 Jun 1830, died in Madison, WI, USA, and was buried in Darien, WI, USA.

Lindsay maried, but his wife's name is unknown. She died in 1874. It is not known if they had any children.

Lindsay was a witness at his brother William's marriage in 1854. He had been a member of the Total Abstinence Society in 1843. The family Bible inscription indicates that he was a medical Doctor.

In the late 1850's Lindsay moved to Wisconsin, U.S.A. with his wife. He died and was buried there. A cenotaph in Lindsay's memory rests in the Economy Cemetery in Nova Scotia, Canada.

23. Margaret "Eliza" Sutherland [2188] (James Jr.², James¹) was born on 13 Sep 1832 and died on 6 Feb 1912, aged 79. She was usually called Eliza.

He grew oats, barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. They raised a few cows, sheep, and pigs as livestock. They sheared enough wool from their sheep to make about 30 pounds of cloth each year. In addition to farming, they owned a fishing boat that they used to check their drift nets. They processed 20 barrels of shad each year, some of which they ate, and sold most of it.

Woodbury was an interesting person who drove the stage coach for some time over the Amherst-Londonderry route. Elizabeth bore four children but the youngest child survived only a fewweeks and Lizzie, herself, died a little more than a month later in 1889. Woodbury attempted to bring up the three remaining children but the oldest, Maggie J., died in 1897 and is with her mother in Rockley cemetery. Woodbury travelled to Colorado and found employment driving a stage coach over the famed Independence Pass between Leadville and Aspen (60miles away). Woodbury was, from all accounts, an excellent teamster who had little difficulty adjusting to the heights in Colorado which were as much as twelve thousand feet of elevation, a tremendous difference from the road over the Cobequids, in Nova Scotia, which rose to a mere nine hundred feet or so. He cared for his horses and ensured that they were always treated well.

Upon retiring, he went to live with his son who by that time had a family and was living, first, in Parachute, Colorado, U.S.A., and then Meeker. He died at the family home on a ranch near Meeker during one of the most severe cold spells ever recorded in Colorado.

Woodbury married Elizabeth "Lizzie" McKay [2219]. Lizzie was born on 25 Nov 1857 and died on 12 Nov 1889, aged 31. She was usually called Lizzie.

Henry Bool was the Baptist Minister who presided over the wedding.

Robert Marshall lived with his parents in Rose, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

He was accidentally, shot and killed by a companion of about the same age. The two boys were attempting to get rid of a troublesome dog. When they rounded a house from opposite directions. His friend fired the shot, thinking he was shooting at the dog. The family moved from the community very soon after the unfortunate incident and it is certain that they moved to Rackley, not far from Pugwash. It is believed Robert was buried in an unmarked grave in the old cemetery in Rose.

Angeline appears in the 1871 census and then was a member of the household of an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fountain of Port Philip, Nova Scotia, Canada. They lived about three km from Rackley, where the rest of her family resided.

Angeline married Mark Frederick Bergman [2222]. Mark was born in 1855 and died in 1918, aged 63.

44. Lorenzo Dow Sutherland [2223] (Ezra³, John², James¹) was born on 6 Nov 1845 and died on 11 Nov 1918, aged 73.

Lorenzo was a farm laborer who worked for his cousin Charles (son of James, Jr.) on the latter's farm a short distance over the Colchester county line in Acadia Mines. After Charles retired from intensive farming in the mid 1880's, Lorenzo inherited the land and purchased a few acres more bordering on the south shore of Sutherland Lake. He established a small commercial enterprise there, called the Lakehouse. He and his brother, Robert Noble, lived a rather idyllic life, farming a bit to provide food for their tables and renting boats and fishing gear to those who spent pleasant hours on the lake. Many would enjoy fishing for the tasty trout in the brook-fed waters. Will Bird, a Nova Scotian author, described Lorenzo as a taciturn individual, who only shared the best fishing locations with clients he liked.

Bird also wrote of Lorenzo's thirst problems. Lorenzo kept a large dipper of cold water nearby at all times, and he and frequently drank copious draughts. He suffered from a kidney disorder, called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, which results in the production of excessive amounts of highly diluted urine. Long after Lorenzo died, Dr. H. H. Bode of the Massachusetts General Hospital visited Westchester County in the 1960's and corresponded with several residents who showed similar symptoms. Dr. Bode enlisted the local residents to help him develop a treatment which that would alleviate the symptoms and allow people to lead a normal life. Bird employed some degree of poetic license when he argued Lorenzo's condition was the result of a curse a crone had cast upon him after he displeased her in some way.

Lorenzo appears as a non-commissioned officer in the muster roll of the Westchester Militia in the 1860's. He was also a member of the Fairfield Lodge, a temperance society, from 1867 to 1869.

He built a house very near the south end of the Lake in the late 1880's using the first lumber produced by a water driven mill established by Dominic Richard, a lumberman who was very active in the area and owned much of the surrounding land. Richard 1000 acres (404.7 hectares) from William Sutherland when William moved away from the Lake area in 1871.

His wife, Agnes, died at the early age of forty and she and Lorenzo rest in the Sutherland cemetery near the lake. After Lorenzo's death, his house was sold to a representative of a Fish and Game Association and used as a base for groups from Truro and vicinity in their hunting and fishing activities. Over time the property fell into disrepair. In about 1980, Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd Scott bought the property and worked tirelessly to restore the house, and it now sits in its original splendour with a commanding view of Lake Sutherland.

Margaret was the daughter of Big Jim Higgins, a pioneer settler of the area, who farmed on the slope of a Cobequid height which became known as Higgins Mountain.

He suffered a fatal heart attack while visiting his son, Willard, in Halifax.

In 1913 Charles and Eva left Masstown, Nova Scotia, Canada, and traveled west with their three children to Paddle River, Alberta, 100 Km north-west of Edmonton. He filed on a homestead and began to clear the land before he could build a house for the family. The clearing of the heavy bush was slow and onerous work. Charles cleared the scrub by hand using an axe and grub hoe. Only after he removed the stumps and roots could he use horse and oxen on the land.

The only thoroughfares were wagon trails winding through the bush, following the higher land as much as possible. Neighbors were few and far between - as were stores, schools, and churches. The new Sutherland homestead was not situated in a school district, and the children had to ride saddle horses twelve km to and from the nearest school. Charles enlisted the support of his new neighbors to petition the Department of Education in Edmonton to establish a school district in the immediate area. This brought results and he was trustee and Secretary-Treasurer of a new school district, Summerdale #3131, for many years.

Even with the new school district, education was haphazard. Few homesteaders had enough money to pay a teacher for the full ten-month period, and fewer still could afford to send their children to Edmonton. The schooling that did exist seldom went higher than Grade Eight.

Charles helped establish and build one of the first churches in the area - the Mosside Presbyterian Church. This Church still serves the people of the area in this decade (as of the 1980's). He was charter member of a Co-operative store which he started together with the area farmers.

Charles became active in the United Farmers of Alberta movement which, as a political party, formed the Government of Alberta for many years. He and many homesteaders lent their weight to persuade the government to build a most necessary railroad to serve the district. Charles and Eva, with the help of the family (the boys homesteading, too, as they grew to maturity), built up quite a large farming operation and prospered moderately.

Sylvester was a problem child. James evidently abandoned him to the care of James' brother, Ezra, and his wife Loisa. Despite their best efforts, Sylvester's Uncle Ezra and Aunt Loise were unable to cope with the troublesome youngster. Sylvester outlasted his welcome in Ezra's homestead, and he was transferred to an unknown family, apparently with equally unsatisfactory results.

No record Sylvester's death has been found, but it may have been in his late teens.

61. James R. Sutherland [2251] (Isiah (twin)³, James Jr.², James¹) was born on 19 Feb 1844 and died on 27 Feb 1900, aged 56.

James had no family.

Following the death of his father, he supported the family as a farm labourer. He occasionally fished the inlets and coves of the coasts of Maine, U.S.A. He enlisted for a 3-year term in the Union Army in December 1863, and became a Private in the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. After brief training, he joined his Company during the Wilderness Campaign of the Civil War. His regiment was flung into the Battle of Spotsylvania. On May 191864 a Minié ball shattered James' left leg, just below the knee, effectively crippling him. James spent painful months in the Colombian Hospital in Washington, D.C. and more in the Cony Hospital in Augusta, Maine before he was medically discharged from the Army.

One surgeon certified that he was fifty per cent disabled while an acquaintance suggested it was a seventy-five per cent disability. Whatever the case, James' farming days were behind him, and he had little means of supporting himself or his family. The government had promised a bounty of three hundred dollars in instalments following his enlistment. His army pay prior to the date of discharge was thirteen dollars a month. His application for a disability pension was processed by a firm of lawyers in Augusta, Maine who promptly lost the application in the great Augusta fire of September 17, 1865. Eventually he was awarded a pension of six dollars a month, which was reduced to four dollars per month two years later.

James lived with his mother, sister Jennie, and brother Charlie, who was described as a helpless cripple. They moved to Pelican Lake, Minnesota in 1872. As far as can be determined, James was unable to work. He apparently supported his family on his meagre pension and the savings he had accumulated from his Army pay and bounty.

As he grew older, James' disabled leg grew more painful. He also developed heart disease. He applied for an increase in pension in 1892. After delays created by clerical errors and misunderstandings, James finally presented his case before the Pension Board, and he was rewarded with an increase of two dollars per month to the amount he was originally awarded.

Upon his death in 1900, a moving eulogy printed in the Hawley Herald paid tribute to the passing of a hero of the Republic. It regaled his devotion to his family and his participation in community affairs. He had obviously earned the respect and affection of his fellow citizens. James frequently corresponded with his relatives in Westchester by mail. It is not clear if he visited them, but it is probable that, in his teens prior to enlistment, he had done so. He was described as blue-eyed, fair complexion, brown hair, and five feet six inches tall. His picture, as well as that of brother Charlie, appears in one of the Sutherland family Bibles.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) was a school teacher in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Following her marriage to Burt Crawford, they moved to Colorado, U.S.A. in about 1880, where he worked in the mines at Leadville.

They had three daughters and three sons in Colorado. One son entered politics and was said to became a Senator. [Editor's note - there were no U.S.A. Senators, last name Crawford, who were born between 1865 and 1915, which would be the earliest and latest possible birth dates of a son of Burton and Elizabeth].

Lizzie married Burton Crawford [2264]. Burton was born in 1857.

Charles inherited the family farm and lived in Middleboro, Nova Scotia, Canada where he farmed the land and painted houses.

Charles and Susan sold their property in 1925 to move to Berkley, California, U.S.A., but Susan contracted a sudden illness and died before they left. Charles and his daughter Myrta made the trip a few months later to visit his son in Berkley. Charles settled in California as a house painter.

Upon his retirement, Charles returned to his family in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts. He was a well-respected citizen and remained active in municipal affairs.

Charles married Susan Emma Moore [2266], daughter of James Lindsay Moore [2179] and Agnes Nancy McCart [2198]. Susan was born in 1863 and died on 2 Nov 1925, aged 62.

Alvin and Ida moved the family to West Hansford, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1871. He worked with his father on the farm for some years then, in 1880, moved to New England, U.S.A where he worked two years a factory in Winchester, Massachusetts before returning to the farm in Nova Scotia.

He married Ruth Smythe of Parrsboro in 1883 but she died of tuberculosis only six months later. In 1886 he married Ida Harkness. She was born in Wine Harbour, Guysborough County. where her father was employed in one of the short-lived gold mines near Wine Harbour. Shortly after their marriage, Alvin and Ida's father, Dan Harkness, formed a partnership to carry on a lumbering business. They lumbered in Southampton, Maccan, and other Cumberland County communities. The closed the business about 1896. Alvin went to Greenwood, British Columbia and worked in the forestry industry there. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1901.

While Alvin was out west, Ida supervised the building of a new house in Oxford, Nova Scotia, and they moved to that house in 1902. He established another lumbering operation and, in 1917. Mack, Alvin and Ida's second son, joined the company after he his overseas tour with the 25th Battalion ended. His next son, Guy, became a member of the firm in 1919 after he gained valuable banking experience for three years. The business served the counties of Pictou and Colchester. The company closed in 1930 under the pressures of the worldwide depression, as well as the illness and advancing age of the principal owner, Alvin.

Alvin married Ruth Smythe [2273]. Ruth was born in 1863 and died in 1883, aged 20. The cause of her death was Tuberculosis.

His business flourished and he enlarged his alleys by taking in the adjoining space at 16 Queen St. Both he and Rhoda became championship bowlers. She carried on the business several years after his untimely death in 1927, but she eventually sold the business in the late 1930's.

This is almost certainly Sylvester Sutherland (Father James Henry Sutherland (1832 - 1890) and Margaret (1845 - Abt 1870) ). Sylvester was an uncontrollable problem child. His father, James, (James Henry [1968] ³, John [1947] ², James [1945] ¹) abandoned him, and Sylvester then lived with his father's brother, Ezra, and his wife Loisa. They were unable to care for him, and Sylvester was transferred to a family unknown, quite likely with Charles and Eva. It is unlikely Sylvester is a blood relative of Charles and Eva.

180. William "Bill" John Minar Sutherland [2426] (Charles Eber⁴, John Jr.³, John², James¹) was born in 1900 in Masstown, NS, Canada. He was usually called Bill.

Bill moved to Alberta with his parents in 1913 and settled in Mosside and Summerdale districts. After finishing his education, he went to the ranching area of southern Alberta. Bill wished to become a cowboy and learn the beef cattle business.

Bill returned to Mosside, filed on a homestead, and worked with his father in developing a farm. In 1927 Bill married the girl next door (a nearby farm), Jennie Thompson, and they set up in his homestead. Its technical designation was NW 1/4 of section 33, Twp 59, Range 4, W of 5 M.

As well as farming and ranching, Bill was interested in public affairs. He served his community a member of the local School Board. When the Province established large school divisions, he was elected as a trustee on a Division School Board. He was one of the founders and the first President of the Barrhead Regional Library. Bill was always interested in Education, and he took a course in Library Science. Bill became the Librarian of the Barrhead Regional Library, a position he held for eighteen years until his retirement. Both Jennie (Bill's wife) and Leona (Bill's daughter) assisted in the library for many years.

Bill organized the Barrhead and District Historical Society, as well as the establishment and building of a Museum. He acted as its Secretary-Treasurer for twelve years. Bill and Jennie were horse enthusiasts. Their horses frequented the show rings of Alberta.

They retired in their home in the town of Barrhead.

Winnifred was an accomplished needlecraft artist. Her work won many prizes throughout Alberta.

Frank moved to Alberta with his parents in 1913. He learned farming by working with his father during his school years. He acquired his own homestead as soon as he was eligible but continued to support his father on the family farm for some time before striking out on his own. Years later he worked on a farm in Stettler District where he met his bride-to-be, Clara Sinclair. After they married, Frank and Clara farmed first on Frank's homestead near Barrhead. Eventually they returned to Stettler and spent many years developing a farm which they purchased.

Frank developed a painful arthritic condition that forced him to retire. He purchased a taxi service in Barrhead and operated it for many years. He tried his hand at farming once more, but he was obliged to retire.

Frank married Clara Sinclair [2689]. Clara was born in 1909.

Will carried on the family farm. Nellie died suddenly, prompting Will to leave the farm. He moved to Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, Canada where he served as the Spring Hill Cemetery caretaker until he retired.

Lennas died five years after his wife, May, died. They both died from tuberculosis, leaving their daughter, Hazel, orphaned. Micke and Lucinda (Hazel's grandparents) adopted Hazel, raising her as their own child.

Alvin farmed and lumbered for several years in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada, before he moved to the United States where he worked for a construction materials manufacturing company. He retired to Oxford, Nova Scotia.

Alvin married Nina Graves [2477]. Nina was born in 1892 and died on 29 Mar 1979, aged 87.

Alvin and Nina had one son who died in infancy.

207. Roy Sutherland [410] (Alvin Albert⁴, William³, James Jr.², James¹) was born on 17 Jan 1888 and died on 31 May 1973, aged 85.

Roy graduated from Business College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He worked in the accounting office of Londonderry Iron Mines from 1907 until he went to Western Canada in 1910. He joined a wholesale fruit firm in Edmonton, Alberta, and later moved with the company to Lethbridge, where he met and married his first wife, Hattie in 1914. She died at the age of 37 in 1925. Roy married his second wife, Mary, in 1928.

Roy returned to Edmonton when he became a partner in the fruit firm. He later formed his own Company. He sold his Edmonton Company in 1931 and he moved to Ontario where he managed a fruit firm in Ottawa and North Bay for three years.

Roy returned to Edmonton again and he became an insurance specialist for the next twenty-five years. From 1939 to 1945 he was a member of the Edmonton School Board. He served as Chairman of the school board during his final year there. Roy was also a member and Elder of the Robertson United Church. At one time he was Chairman of Board of the Edmonton YMCA, and he served as a member of several Service Clubs, including Kiwanis.

Roy married Hattie M. Reynolds [2478]. Hattie was born in 1888 and died in 1925, aged 37.

208. Mack Sutherland [411] (Alvin Albert⁴, William³, James Jr.², James¹) was born on 26 Dec 1889 in West Hansford, NS, Canada and died on 14 Nov 1932, aged 42.

He became an apprentice machinist in the Oxford Foundry in his teens following the move of the family to Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the first resident of Oxford to join the war in 1914. Mack enlisted as a private and trained in the Land Force Atlantic Area Training Centre in Aldershot, Kings County, Nova Scotia with the 25th Battalion and Overseas with the Second Canadian Contingent. He encountered his first of many battles in France early in 1915.

Mack suffered a serious shrapnel wound in November that year. Following hospitalization for many months, he returned to Canada aboard the SS Corsican in November, 1916, He was medically discharged at the rank of Lance Sergeant on April 30, 1917. Mack's military awards included the 1914 Star (often called the Mons Star) and the Military Medal.

After his service in the army, Mack joined his father, Alvin, in the lumber business. He and his father narrowly escaped death when their lumber camp near Riversdale, Nova Scotia, caught fire in March, 1918. Twenty people lost their lives, including a woman (the camp cook) and her six children. The fire was ruled an accident.

Mack left the lumber business in 1926, and he was appointed Postmaster in Oxford. Complications from his war wounds became serious in 1932 and he was admitted to Camp Hill Veteran's Hospital in the spring and died in November that year. His wife continued in Oxford until the early 1940's when she moved to Vancouver.

Mack married Olive Irving [2480]. Olive was born on 6 Mar 1892 and died on 13 Jul 1949, aged 57.

Mack and Olive had no children.

209. Ruby Isabella Sutherland [11] (Alvin Albert⁴, William³, James Jr.², James¹) was born on 12 Feb 1894 in Hansford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada and died on 1 Apr 1975 in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada, aged 81. The cause of her death was Ovarian cancer.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland was born on 12 Feb 1894 in Southhampton, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Alvin Sutherland and Ida Harkness.

On 12 Dec 1923, at age 29, she married Donald McPhail in Truro, Nova Scotia.

She lived with Donald in Nova Scotia and later in Sackville, New Brunswick, where they raised their family.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland died on 1 Apr 1975 in Sackville, New Brunswick, at age 81.

She and Donald had three children.

Donald McPhail was born on 3 May 1894 in Havelock, Kings County, New Brunswick. His religion was Methodist in 1901.

He grew up in Havelock. By 1911 Donald was living with his family at 9 Mill Street in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a salesman.

On 19 Mar 1918, at age 23, Donald enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, Regimental No. 3182093, 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment. At that time he was living with his parents at 85 Lower Victoria Street in Amherst and was employed as manager of a retail boot and shoe store.

By 1921 Donald was living at 86 Queen Street in Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a YMCA secretary.

On 12 Dec 1923 Donald married Ruby Isabella Sutherland in Hansford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Donald was age 29.

Donald worked with the YMCA in Amherst and Truro before being appointed General Secretary of the Halifax YMCA in 1929. In 1939 he became Director of YMCA War Services for the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland. After the Second World War he served as Secretary of the Maritime Religious Educational Council.

In 1946 Donald joined Mutual Life of Canada and later operated an independent insurance business in Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick until his retirement.

Donald was also a well-known tenor soloist and founded and directed several men's choral groups, including the Orpheus Male Choir in Halifax from 1937 to 1941.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland died on 1 Apr 1975 when Donald was age 80.

Donald McPhail died on 23 Apr 1986 in Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, age 91.

Donald and Ruby had three children.

He returned to Nova Scotia in 1940 to join the staff of Furness Withy Ltd. of Halifax. Aubrey retired in 1965.

He was a member of the United Church and belonged to the Masonic Order.

Aileen attended school in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, and later went to the Halifax Ladies College specializing in Household Science. She became the matron of the Nova Scotia Training School in Brookside, near Truro, Nova Scotia, for five years.

Aileen worked in hotel and dining room management in Sydney, Halifax, Calgary, Alberta, Banff, and Nanaimo British Columbia. While in British Columbia, she married Morley, who had just returned from service overseas in WW II.

She worked for the Motor Vehicles department of the B.C. Government. She and Morley retired to Richmond, British Columbia.

Aileen married Morley Gordon Gillander [2484]. Morley was born on 28 Oct 1911 and died on 25 Aug 1975, aged 63.

Morley graduated with an Arts degree from the University of British Columbia before he served overseas with the Canadian Army during World War II. When he returned to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he married Aileen. The lived in Vancouver.

As a civilian, Morley taught English, and worked at several city schools until he retired in 1973. Born in Alberta, he had graduated in Arts from the University of British Columbia.

214. Conn Harkness Sutherland [415] (Alvin Albert⁴, William³, James Jr.², James¹) was born on 8 Mar 1911 in Oxford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada.

Conn attended school in Oxford, and later at the Halifax Academy. He earned a Science degree and a Diploma of Education at Dalhousie University.

Conn was the Principal of the Maccan School from 1936 to 1938 and the River Hebert Schools from 1938 to 1941. Both schools lie in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.

In 1941 Conn joined the Meteorological Services of Canada. He provided weather services to air crew at Royal Canadian Air Force stations in Chatham and Moncton in New Brunswick. In 1945, Conn transferred to the civilian Forecast Office at Moncton Airport.

Conn and Frances moved to Gander, Newfoundland with their infant son, John, for a two-year tour of duty that stretched into 22 years. Conn was appointed Officer-in-Charge of the large Trans-Atlantic Weather Office there in 1956, and he returned to the Regional Headquarters in Moncton in 1970 to a senior administrative position. In 1973 Conn and Frances retired to Mississauga, Ontario.

Conn is the author of The Sutherlands & Westchester, Nova Scotia, by C. H. Sutherland, published in 1986, which is the source of a great deal of information in this family record.

Welwood was an aeronautical engineer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and reached the rank of Colonel. He and Frances were in a car accident in which he died and Frances was seriously injured.

He devoted his life to ranching, construction, and oil drilling. He was supervisor of the Rio Blanco County Road and Bridge Department at Meeker from 1954 to 1978 when he retired. He and Vi moved to their retirement home in Rifle, forty miles away.

Lila grew up in the Muskoka area of Ontario, Canada, near the small community of Ashworth. During the winter she skied or walked over the unplowed roads to the nearest school 4 Km away. She attended High School education in Bracebridge, Ontario from 1938 to 1942.

Following two years of making parts for De Haviland aircraft, Lila attended a nurses course at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, and graduated in 1948. She nursed in Halifax until her marriage.
