1. Donald Clierach Chisholm [385], son of Donald Clierach "Ian Gobha" Chisholm Sr. [4739] and Margaret Sutherland Chisholm [4740], was born on 25 Feb 1752 in Strathglass, Inverness-shire, Scotland and died on 24 Jan 1810 in Onslow Township, Colchester, NS, Canada, aged 57.

Donald Chisholm was born in 1752 in Strathglass, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

By about 1772, at about age 20, Donald became a father with the birth of his son William Chisholm.

On about 1775, at about age 23, Donald emigrated from Scotland to North America, likely as part of a Highland migration movement departing western Scotland.

Between about 1775 and 1777, at about ages 23 to 25, Donald entered military service in the Royal Highland Emigrants (84th Regiment of Foot).

On 24 Aug 1778, at age 26, Donald was recorded on a muster roll of the 2nd Battalion under Major John Small.

From about 1775 to 1783, at about ages 23 to 31, Donald served within the Loyalist military structure during the American Revolutionary War.

After the conclusion of the war in 1783, at about age 31, Donald became eligible for land grants in British North America.

By about 1785, at about age 33, Donald was part of a Highland settlement movement in Nova Scotia, particularly in regions such as Pictou County.

In 1797, at age 45, Donald received a grant of 350 acres at East River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Donald and Elizabeth had four children.

19. Ida Harkness [378] (Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 1 Dec 1867 in Wine Harbour, NS, Canada and died in 1941 in Oxford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada, aged 74.

Ida married Alvin Albert Sutherland [377], son of William Sutherland [2145] and Mary Jane Crawford [2146], on 31 Aug 1886. Alvin was born in 1860 in Westchester, NS, Canada and died on 29 Oct 1942 in Pugwash, NS, Canada, aged 82.

Alvin and Ida moved the family to West Hansford, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1871. He worked with his father on the farm for some years then, in 1880, moved to New England, U.S.A where he worked two years a factory in Winchester, Massachusetts before returning to the farm in Nova Scotia.

He married Ruth Smythe of Parrsboro in 1883 but she died of tuberculosis only six months later. In 1886 he married Ida Harkness. She was born in Wine Harbour, Guysborough County. where her father was employed in one of the short-lived gold mines near Wine Harbour. Shortly after their marriage, Alvin and Ida's father, Dan Harkness, formed a partnership to carry on a lumbering business. They lumbered in Southampton, Maccan, and other Cumberland County communities. The closed the business about 1896. Alvin went to Greenwood, British Columbia and worked in the forestry industry there. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1901.

While Alvin was out west, Ida supervised the building of a new house in Oxford, Nova Scotia, and they moved to that house in 1902. He established another lumbering operation and, in 1917. Mack, Alvin and Ida's second son, joined the company after he his overseas tour with the 25th Battalion ended. His next son, Guy, became a member of the firm in 1919 after he gained valuable banking experience for three years. The business served the counties of Pictou and Colchester. The company closed in 1930 under the pressures of the worldwide depression, as well as the illness and advancing age of the principal owner, Alvin.

22. Roy Sutherland [410] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 17 Jan 1888 and died on 31 May 1973, aged 85.

Roy graduated from Business College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He worked in the accounting office of Londonderry Iron Mines from 1907 until he went to Western Canada in 1910. He joined a wholesale fruit firm in Edmonton, Alberta, and later moved with the company to Lethbridge, where he met and married his first wife, Hattie in 1914. She died at the age of 37 in 1925. Roy married his second wife, Mary, in 1928.

Roy returned to Edmonton when he became a partner in the fruit firm. He later formed his own Company. He sold his Edmonton Company in 1931 and he moved to Ontario where he managed a fruit firm in Ottawa and North Bay for three years.

Roy returned to Edmonton again and he became an insurance specialist for the next twenty-five years. From 1939 to 1945 he was a member of the Edmonton School Board. He served as Chairman of the school board during his final year there. Roy was also a member and Elder of the Robertson United Church. At one time he was Chairman of Board of the Edmonton YMCA, and he served as a member of several Service Clubs, including Kiwanis.

Roy married Hattie M. Reynolds [2478] on 24 Jun 1914. Hattie was born in 1888 and died in 1925, aged 37.

Roy next married Mary Willett McLean [2479] on 2 Jun 1928. Mary was born on 24 Feb 1902 and died on 7 Jun 1968, aged 66.

23. Mack Sutherland [411] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 26 Dec 1889 in West Hansford, NS, Canada and died on 14 Nov 1932, aged 42.

He became an apprentice machinist in the Oxford Foundry in his teens following the move of the family to Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the first resident of Oxford to join the war in 1914. Mack enlisted as a private and trained in the Land Force Atlantic Area Training Centre in Aldershot, Kings County, Nova Scotia with the 25th Battalion and Overseas with the Second Canadian Contingent. He encountered his first of many battles in France early in 1915.

Mack suffered a serious shrapnel wound in November that year. Following hospitalization for many months, he returned to Canada aboard the SS Corsican in November, 1916, He was medically discharged at the rank of Lance Sergeant on April 30, 1917. Mack's military awards included the 1914 Star (often called the Mons Star) and the Military Medal.

After his service in the army, Mack joined his father, Alvin, in the lumber business. He and his father narrowly escaped death when their lumber camp near Riversdale, Nova Scotia, caught fire in March, 1918. Twenty people lost their lives, including a woman (the camp cook) and her six children. The fire was ruled an accident.

Mack left the lumber business in 1926, and he was appointed Postmaster in Oxford. Complications from his war wounds became serious in 1932 and he was admitted to Camp Hill Veteran's Hospital in the spring and died in November that year. His wife continued in Oxford until the early 1940's when she moved to Vancouver.

Mack married Olive Irving [2480] on 18 Jun 1919. Olive was born on 6 Mar 1892 and died on 13 Jul 1949, aged 57.

Mack and Olive had no children.

24. Ruby Isabella Sutherland [11] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 12 Feb 1894 in Hansford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada and died on 1 Apr 1975 in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada, aged 81. The cause of her death was Ovarian cancer.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland was born on 12 Feb 1894 in Hansford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. She went to school there where she learned to read and write.

Between 1911 and 1916, between ages 17 and 22, Ruby moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where she lived with her brother, Roy, his wife Hattie, and their one-year-old daughter. Ruby worked as a stenographer for a wholesale fruit company.

By 1 Jun 1921, at age 27, she had returned to Oxford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, where she worked as a bookkeeper.

On 12 Dec 1923, at age 29, she married Donald McPhail in Truro, Nova Scotia. They moved to Halifax where they started their family, later to Truro, and then to Sackville, New Brunswick. More details appear in the entry for Donald.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland died on 1 Apr 1975 in Sackville, New Brunswick, at age 81.

She and Donald had three children.

Ruby married Donald McPhail [12], son of Alexander "Alex" Bede McPhail [36] and Annie Isabelle McNeil [35], on 12 Dec 1923 in Oxford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada. Marriage status: married. Donald was born on 3 May 1894 in Havelock, King's County, NB, Canada and died on 23 Apr 1986 in Sackville, Westmorland County, NB, Canada, aged 91.

Donald McPhail was born on 3 May 1894 in Havelock, Kings County, New Brunswick. His religion was Methodist in 1901.

He grew up in Havelock. By 1911 Donald was living with his family at 9 Mill Street in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a salesman.

On 19 Mar 1918, at age 23, Donald enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, Regimental No. 3182093, 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment. At that time he was living with his parents at 85 Lower Victoria Street in Amherst and was employed as manager of a retail boot and shoe store.

By 1921 Donald was living at 86 Queen Street in Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a YMCA secretary.

On 12 Dec 1923 Donald married Ruby Isabella Sutherland in Hansford, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Donald was age 29.

Donald worked with the YMCA in Amherst and Truro before being appointed General Secretary of the Halifax YMCA in 1929. In 1939 he became Director of YMCA War Services for the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland. After the Second World War he served as Secretary of the Maritime Religious Educational Council.

In 1946 Donald joined Mutual Life of Canada and later operated an independent insurance business in Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick until his retirement.

Donald was also a well-known tenor soloist and founded and directed several men's choral groups, including the Orpheus Male Choir in Halifax from 1937 to 1941.

Ruby Isabella Sutherland died on 1 Apr 1975 when Donald was age 80.

Donald McPhail died on 23 Apr 1986 in Sackville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, age 91.

Donald and Ruby had three children.

25. Guy Sutherland [412] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 10 Mar 1897 in West Hansford, NS, Canada and died on 13 Feb 1981, aged 83.

Guy completed high school in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada. He worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia (now Scotiabank).

In 1920 he joined his father's lumber firm until the company collapsed under the burden of the depression. Guy joined the Nova Scotia Department of Welfare as an accountant, and became the Financial Director before he retired in 1964.

Guy married Elsie O. Finigan [2481] on 2 Jun 1921. Elsie was born on 25 Sep 1894 and was christened on 26 Mar 1895.

John Collins notes say Elsie was christened in 1985 Mar 26. I assume that was intended to read 1895 Mar 26.

27. Aubrey Sutherland [413] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 17 Dec 1904 in Oxford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada and died on 3 Oct 1972, aged 67.

Aubrey graduated from Oxford High School and then attended Maritime Business College in Halifax. He graduated in the mid 20's and worked in Sydney before he moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he worked as an accountant with Gillespie Grain Co. for about ten years. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1940 to join the staff of Furness Withy Ltd. of Halifax. Aubrey retired in 1965.

He was a member of the United Church and belonged to the Masonic Order.

Aubrey married Jessie A. Sillers [2483] on 30 Dec 1935. Jessie was born on 1 May 1906 in Alice, MT, USA.

Jessie's parents moved to western U.S.A., where she was born, before they returned to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

28. Aileen Hortense Sutherland [414] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 11 Jun 1909.

Aileen attended school in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, and later went to the Halifax Ladies College specializing in Household Science. She became the matron of the Nova Scotia Training School in Brookside, near Truro, Nova Scotia, for five years.

Aileen worked in hotel and dining room management in Sydney, Halifax, Calgary, Alberta, Banff, and Nanaimo British Columbia. While in British Columbia, she married Morley, who had just returned from service overseas in WW II.

She worked for the Motor Vehicles department of the B.C. Government. She and Morley retired to Richmond, British Columbia.

Aileen married Morley Gordon Gillander [2484] on 9 Jan 1945. Morley was born on 28 Oct 1911 and died on 25 Aug 1975, aged 63.

Morley graduated with an Arts degree from the University of British Columbia before he served overseas with the Canadian Army during World War II. When he returned to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he married Aileen. The lived in Vancouver.

As a civilian, Morley taught English, and worked at several city schools until he retired in 1973. Born in Alberta, he had graduated in Arts from the University of British Columbia.

29. Conn Harkness Sutherland [415] (Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 8 Mar 1911 in Oxford, Cumberland County, NS, Canada.

Conn attended school in Oxford, and later at the Halifax Academy. He earned a Science degree and a Diploma of Education at Dalhousie University.

Conn was the Principal of the Maccan School from 1936 to 1938 and the River Hebert Schools from 1938 to 1941. Both schools lie in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.

In 1941 Conn joined the Meteorological Services of Canada. He provided weather services to air crew at Royal Canadian Air Force stations in Chatham and Moncton in New Brunswick. In 1945, Conn transferred to the civilian Forecast Office at Moncton Airport.

Conn and Frances moved to Gander, Newfoundland with their infant son, John, for a two-year tour of duty that stretched into 22 years. Conn was appointed Officer-in-Charge of the large Trans-Atlantic Weather Office there in 1956, and he returned to the Regional Headquarters in Moncton in 1970 to a senior administrative position. In 1973 Conn and Frances retired to Mississauga, Ontario.

Conn is the author of The Sutherlands & Westchester, Nova Scotia, by C. H. Sutherland, published in 1986, which is the source of a great deal of information in this family record.

Conn married Frances Maud Carson [2485] on 25 Mar 1944. Frances was born on 22 Jun 1921.

Frances graduated with Honors from Mount Allison University. She joined the Meteorological Service and became one of the first female meteorologists in Canada.

30. Evelyn Frances Sutherland R.N. [2740] (Roy Sutherland6, Ida Harkness5, Mary Chilsholm4, Thomas3, Alexander2, Donald Clierach1) was born on 9 Jul 1915.

Evelyn studied nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She served in South Africa in WW II with a contingent of Canadian nurses. Evelyn worked for some years in Johannesburg, where she married Max Gordon Benham, a mining ventilation engineer. They moved to Gwelo, Southern Rhodesia, now Gweru, Zimbabwe, and later moved to Salisbury.

After Max died, Evelyn taught music. She left Salisbury in 1977 and returned to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada because of political and racial issues of Zimbabwe. Her daughter Ann, and Ann's husband, Oliver, joined Evelyn in Edmonton. Soon after Evelyn and Ann moved to Calbourne, on the Isle of Wight, U.K.

Evelyn married Max GORDON Benham [2741] on 1 Jun 1946. Max was born on 16 Mar 1905 and died on 3 Dec 1971, aged 66.

Joan graduated from the University of Alberta with a Master's degree in Biochemistry. She was a Clinical Chemist on the staff of the University Hospital. Joan was also a computer specialist, and she lectured in that field.

Joan married Leo H. Dakin [2743] on 25 Jun 1955. Leo was born in 1918 and died in 1955, aged 37.

The passenger record indicated that England was her intended future country of permanent residence.

Don took a sabbatical from External Affairs in 1974 to become Assistant Deputy Minister of the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion (DREE) in Moncton, New Brunswick, before returning to External Affairs in Ottawa in 1976.

From 1979 to 1983 he served as Canada's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1983 to 1987 he served as Canada's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, West Germany.

In 1987 Don left the foreign service and became the inaugural President of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency in Halifax, NS. He later served briefly as Senior Advisor to the Privy Council Office in Ottawa, Ontario before retiring in 1990.

During retirement Don and Ruth lived in several places including Murray Corner, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Green Cove Springs, Florida, and Bedford, Halifax County, Nova Scotia.

In 2022 Don and Ruth moved to the Amica retirement residence in Pickering, Ontario to be closer to their children.

From 1977 to 1979 Ruth served as a professor of statistics at Algonquin College in Ottawa.

In 1979 Ruth moved again to Geneva, Switzerland when Don was appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In 1983 the family moved to Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany, during Don's posting as Canada's Ambassador.

In 1987 Ruth moved with Don to Halifax, Halifax County, Nova Scotia when he became the inaugural President of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

During those tenures he lived in Edmonton, Alberta, then Calgary, then Montreal, Quebec, and then Halifax, Nova Scotia.

He retired in December of 1980. He and Evelyn moved to their retirement home in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

On 1982 Kim married Keith Acheson in Ottawa, Ontario. Keith had four children from a previous marriage. Kim and Keith had no children. This marriage ended in divorce in 1984.

In 1984 Kim moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue graduate studies in economics at the University of California. She withdrew from that program due to an illness and returned to Ottawa and resumed her career with the Bank of Canada.

Kim later pursued doctoral studies in economics at Carleton University but did not complete the degree.

Around 2008 Kim left the Bank of Canada. She later continued to live in Ottawa and became active as a volunteer with several organizations.

Joce and Sandy later moved to Châteauguay, Québec, about 30 km south of Montréal. After Sandy was transferred to the Johnson & Johnson Toronto office they sold their Châteauguay house and purchased a home together in Markham, York County, Ontario.

Joce later established a privately held marketing consulting company. She sold the company and retired in 2005 at about age 48.

After Sandy retired from Johnson & Johnson in 2006 the couple spent time travelling internationally.

In 2025 Joce and Sandy sold their Markham home and purchased a home overlooking a golf course pond in Stouffville, York County, Ontario.

Donald Alexander McPhail was born in 1960 in Billancourt, Paris, France. He went by the name of Alex. Because his father, Don, was serving in the Canadian diplomatic corps at the time, Alex was born under diplomatic immunity and is registered as a Canadian citizen born abroad.

At about age one Alex moved with his family from Paris, France to Ottawa, Ontario. In 1964 he moved with his family to Geneva, Switzerland when his father began a diplomatic posting there. The family returned to Ottawa in 1967.

In 1970 Alex moved with his family to Caracas, Venezuela when Don was appointed ambassador. He returned to Ottawa in 1972. From 1974 to 1976 Alex lived in Moncton, Westmorland County, New Brunswick when Don took a two-year government position there. At other times Alex lived at the family home in Ottawa.

Alex completed a degree in physics at the University of Waterloo in 1983 at about age 23. After graduating he returned to Ottawa where he worked in several high-technology positions in software engineering.

In 1984 Alex married Lisa Marilyn Baker in Manotick, Ontario. Alex was 24.

In 1988 Alex began collaborating with his father-in-law, Ralph Baker, in the international sales and production of satellite recorder control systems. Alex's company, TeraScope, manufactured and installed the systems while Ralph led sales activities.

In 1989 Alex founded the company TeraScope.

Alex later held senior management roles including Director of Business Development at Lansdowne Consulting Inc. and Director of Canadian Sales and Marketing at Marconi Canada.

Alex later acquired EXA Consulting from Ralph Baker and led the company for many years. Through EXA Consulting he directed proposal and capture teams competing for large and complex programs often valued in the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. Alex led EXA Consulting to become Canada's leading capture and proposal support firm.

Alex's work allowed him to undertake extended assignments in several countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Thailand. Within Canada he worked on assignments in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal, and Halifax.

In 2023 Alex wrote and published the book Win Big The EXA Way: The Comprehensive Guide to Capture and Proposal Leadership.

Alex and Lisa had two daughters.

Lisa Marilyn Baker was born in 13 March 1962 in Ottawa, Ontario. Lisa grew up in Nepan, a suburb of Ottawa.

In 1976, at the age of 14 she moved to Toulouse, France, with her family when her father worked with the European Space Agency on a one-year exchange assignment. After returning to Ottawa, two years later, Lisa met Alex in high school, and eventually married him. She and Alex remained in Ottawa.

In 1984 Lisa graduated from the University of Ottawa with an Honours Degree in English, and later she attended Western University in London, Ontario, Canada where she earned a Masters Degree in Library and Information Sciences. She worked in the Canadian Federal Government in various departments and roles before she retired.

She is an avid sewer and makes many of her own clothing as well as coveted outfits for her grandchildren and other family members.
